Place: Aquatic Park
Location: San Francisco , California
Time of year: October
Trip Notes:
If you are doing the Escape from Alcatraz , in San Francisco for a business trip, or just looking for a little open water (saltwater) swimming, then you should consider giving Aquatic Park in San Francisco a try. The water is cold (somewhere in the low 50’s), murky, very salty and contains a few natives (i.e. seals).
Aquatic Park has buoys setout for you to swim around and is free to anyone that wants to enter. There are typically other swimmers, or boaters in the water, especially on the weekends. Even though Aquatic Park is a cove, there are still some pretty strong currents.
There are a couple of facility options. For the brave, right next to the water, there are public restrooms that one can change in. Just outside of the public restroom is a shower. The civilized approach is to purchase a one day pass to the Dolphin Club. For a nominal fee (somewhere around $6.50), you can stow your gear in a locker (bring a lock). After a hard day’s swim (or whenever your hands, feet and brain go numb), you can use not only their HOT showers, but the sauna as well….aaahh! Be warned that if you are caught or seen wearing a wetsuit, you will be teased…by all! It seems that the locals, especially the older ones, believe that anything more than a Speedo is a waste.
Good Luck and happy swimming!
